Pharmacognostic Cabinet

The Pharmacognostic Cabinet houses the historic didactic collection of the Department of Pharmacognosy, Jagiellonian University Medical College (JU MC). Its most valuable part is the original collection of raw materials of plant and animal origin, assembled by Prof. Florian Sawiczewski in years 1825-1857. Its surviving part includes raw materials stored in more than 1000 glass vessels in three sizes and numerous boxes, labelled with the Jagiellonian University coat of arms.

The collection of the Pharmacognostic Cabinet is part of the special heritage of the Jagiellonian University and its functioning is regulated by specific regulations. The Cabinet is registered with the Association of University Museums, and is also on the list of the Committee of Museums and University Collections of the International Council of Museums (ICOM UMAC).

The Pharmacognostic Cabinet is on display at the Faculty of Pharmacy, JU MC (on the fifth floor of Building A). Visits are available by appointment. The collection is supervised by Dr Justyna Makowska-Wąs.

Pharmacognosy began to specialise in the qualitative characterisation of raw materials, in terms of their identity, origin, acquisition and chemical composition, since the beginning of the 19th century. To address the needs of the new science, professor Florian Sawiczewski began to reorganise the inadequate equipment and teaching collections of the department, forming the actual Pharmacognostic Cabinet.
