UJ CM Leaders Recognized in the 2024 STU List: Seven Representatives Among Poland’s Most Influential Figures in Medicine and Healthcare

“Puls Medycyny” has proudly unveiled its 22nd annual STU List, a prestigious ranking that honors the most influential individuals in Polish medicine and healthcare. This year’s list features an impressive seven representatives from Jagiellonian University Collegium Medicum (UJ CM).  

Professor Wojciech Szczeklik, Head of the Intensive Care and Perioperative Medicine Unit at UJ CM, achieved the highest ranking among his UJ CM colleagues, securing 7th place in the “Most Influential People in Polish Medicine” category.

The STU List is a unique compilation of achievements and contributions by individuals who have made a significant impact on Polish medicine and the healthcare system in the given year. The ranking is curated in collaboration with a panel of experts invited by the editors of “Puls Medycyny.”

This year, 43 experts evaluated candidates across two categories: “Most Influential People in Polish Medicine” and “Most Influential People in the Healthcare System.” Jurors, drawing from a list of candidates proposed by the editors, were also welcome to submit their own nominations.

The candidate evaluation process encompassed three criteria: achievements and accomplishments in 2024, positive impact on the development of Polish medicine/healthcare system, and strength of public influence. Each juror assigned points on a scale of 1 to 10, with the final ranking determined by the total number of points.

Among the most influential people in Polish medicine in 2024, seven representatives from UJ CM stood out:

  • Professor Wojciech Szczeklik – specialist in internal medicine, anesthesiology and intensive care, and clinical immunology; Head of the Intensive Care and Perioperative Medicine Unit at UJ CM and the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at the 5th Military Clinical Hospital with Polyclinic in Krakow, visiting professor at McMaster University in Canada.
  • Professor Tomasz Grodzicki – specialist in internal medicine, geriatrics, and hypertension; Head of the Department and Clinic of Internal Diseases, Head of the Department of Internal Diseases at the University Hospital in Krakow.
  • Professor Maciej Małecki – specialist in internal medicine, diabetology, endocrinology, and laboratory diagnostics; Vice-Rector of UJ for Collegium Medicum, Head of the Department and Clinic of Metabolic Diseases at UJ CM and the Department of Diabetology, Internal and Metabolic Diseases at the University Hospital in Krakow; member of the Board of Experts of the National Chamber of Physicians, Chairman of the Audit Committee of the Polish Diabetes Association.
  • Professor Dominika Dudek – specialist in psychiatry; Head of the Department of Psychiatry at UJ CM and the Clinic of Adult Psychiatry at UJ CM; President of the Polish Psychiatric Association, Chairwoman of the Bioethics Committee of the Jagiellonian University.
  • Professor Michał Pędziwiatr – specialist in general and oncological surgery, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), Fellow of the European Board of Surgery (FEBS); Head of the 2nd Department of General Surgery at UJ CM, Clinic of General, Oncological and Metabolic Surgery at UJ CM, Clinic of General Surgery and Emergency Conditions at UJ CM and the Clinical Department of General, Oncological, Metabolic and Emergency Surgery at the University Hospital in Krakow; member of the Board of the Polish Surgeons Association, Chairman of the Lapco-Poland Council.
  • Professor Janusz Skalski – specialist in cardiac surgery and pediatric surgery at the Institute of Pediatrics of UJ CM, consultant in cardiac surgery at the University Children’s Hospital in Krakow; President of the Polish Society of Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons, President of the Schola Cordis Foundation for Supporting Pediatric Cardiac Surgery; Chairman of the Commission for the History and Philosophy of Medicine of the Polish Academy of Sciences Branch in Krakow; member of the board (secretary) of the Club of Polish Cardiac Surgeons (until June 2024); initiator, manager and editor-in-chief of the monthly Discussion Club of the Regional Medical Chamber in Krakow; co-editor of “Polish Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.”
  • In the “Most Influential People in the Healthcare System” category, Professor Agnieszka Słowik, Head of the Department and Clinic of Neurology at UJ CM, the Department of Neurogenetics at UJ CM, the Clinical Department of Neurology at the University Hospital in Krakow, and national consultant in the field of neurology (2019-2024), was recognized.
