We are proud to announce that Dr. hab. Monika Marcinkowska from our Faculty has been awarded the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award! She received this distinction in the category of highly valued scientific achievements that constitute the basis for awarding the degree of habilitated doctor for her work “New directions in the search for effective therapy for CNS diseases based on the modulation of GABA-A receptor function”.
In her work, Dr. hab. Monika Marcinkowska identified ligands for α1-GABA-A receptors that have shown significant efficacy in modulating psychosis in preclinical studies. This achievement paves the way for the development of a new generation of atypical antipsychotic drugs.
It is worth emphasizing that the results of Dr. hab. Marcinkowska’s research were the first reports of this kind in the world!
Dr. hab. Monika Marcinkowska is a graduate of our Faculty. In her scientific career, she has completed internships at the Polytechnic University of Milan, Utrecht University, and the University of Valencia, among others. She is the author of numerous publications and co-author of patent applications in the field of searching for new drugs. She has led research projects funded by the National Science Centre and the Foundation for Polish Science. She is actively involved in the development of the Centre for the Development of Therapies for Civilization and Age-Related Diseases (CDT-CARD) at the Jagiellonian University Medical College.
The Prime Minister’s Awards have been granted since 1994 to outstanding scientists and artists. This year, the winners also include Dr. Katarzyna Kleczkowska from the Faculty of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University and Dr. Tomasz Danel from the Faculty of Chemistry of the Jagiellonian University.
