JUMC ranked highest in the country in the prestigious GRAS 2024 ranking

The results of the latest Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) have been announced. In two categories – Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences – our university has been ranked highest among all Polish medical universities included in the ranking.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the researchers who contribute significantly to the development of these distinguished fields on a daily basis. We can proudly say that medical and pharmaceutical sciences conducted at the Jagiellonian University Medical College are appreciated and have held high positions in prestigious international rankings for many editions. Success in the GRAS 2024 ranking is further proof of this,” says Prof. Maciej Małecki, Vice-Rector of the Jagiellonian University for the Medical College. “At the same time, I regret that the flawed principles on which the evaluation of the quality of scientific activity of universities is carried out in Poland do not allow us to see what is seen from a global perspective.”

GRAS is an international ranking of universities evaluated in terms of 54 academic subjects grouped into five categories: natural sciences, social sciences, medical sciences, life sciences, and engineering. The authors of the ranking assess universities using five indicators: the number of publications in a given discipline in journals from the first quartile in terms of Impact Factor, normalized citation impact, international collaboration assessed on the basis of publications, the number of articles published in top journals, and prestigious awards received by scientists in selected fields.

This year’s edition of GRAS included over 1900 universities from 96 countries, evaluating 55 different disciplines. As in other rankings, exact places are awarded only to the top 100 universities – the rest are placed in ranges.

This year, two disciplines conducted at the Jagiellonian University Medical College were included in the list, in the 201-300 range: Clinical Medicine (an improvement over last year’s edition) and Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, which has maintained this position steadily since 2020.

GRAS is one of two components – alongside ARWU (Academic Ranking of World Universities) – that make up the Shanghai Ranking, known as the Shanghai List.

ShanghaiRanking Consultancy is the organization responsible for creating and publishing the so-called Shanghai List (Academic Ranking of World Universities, ARWU). It is one of the most important and recognizable university rankings in the world. The list was first published in 2003 and annually presents an assessment of the best universities.
